Public employers — Texas

Public employers are subject to statutory requirements regarding employment that have been established by the Legislature. Extensive materials are available from the State of Texas that detail all requirements. The following is provided as a highlight as to the differences in the laws regulating public employment as opposed to private employment and is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all legislative requirements.

Observing holidays - state agencies

Texas state law provides that employees of state agencies are entitled to a paid day off from work on national, state and optional holidays observed by the State. For fiscal year 2023, the following holidays are observed:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (3rd Monday in January)
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Eve Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Day after Christmas Day
  • Presidents Day.

In addition, the following are optional holidays:

  • Rosh Hashanah
  • Yom Kippur
  • Good Friday.
