Discrimination — Georgia

Protections from discrimination

Federal law prohibits employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of:

  • race
  • color
  • national origin
  • religion
  • sex (gender discrimination and discrimination based on an employee’s sexual orientation or gender identity are also considered classes of sex discrimination)
  • pregnancy
  • age
  • disability
  • veteran status
  • genetic information. 

Georgia employers are wise to become familiar with the following statutes in order to lessen their exposure to costly lawsuits and damage awards.

Laws prohibiting discrimination include, but are not limited to:

  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII)
  • Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act (Section 1981)
  • Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA)
  • Equal Pay Act (EPA)
  • Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA)
  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)
