Family and medical leave — Iowa

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the following reasons:

  • to recover from a personal illness
  • to care for sick family members
  • to care for a child after the birth of an employee’s son or daughter, or placement of a son or daughter with the employee for adoption or foster care
  • for qualifying exigencies arising out of the fact that the employee’s spouse, child or parent is on or has been notified of an impending call to active duty with the Armed Forces.

Eligible employees may take up to a combined total of 26 workweeks to care for a sick or injured current member of the Armed Forces. Employers covered by the FMLA are required to grant such leave and reinstate the employee to the same or equivalent position upon timely return from FMLA leave.
