Wages and hours — Iowa

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) was originally enacted in 1938 to provide employees a “fair wage for a fair day’s work.” It has been amended several times since, but its focus remains the same, to establish standards for:

  • minimum wage rate
  • overtime pay
  • child labor
  • recordkeeping.

While the FLSA requires employers to pay a minimum wage and overtime to many employees, it also contains numerous exemptions to these requirements. These subjects, among others, are touched upon in this chapter. Because there are many exemptions and regulations, however, this chapter is not intended to be exhaustive. If there are questions about wage and hour practices, seek legal counsel experienced with these laws.

Iowa has enacted its own wage and hour laws. These laws include minimum wage (consistent with federal), child labor rules and the Wage Payment Collection Law.

Coverage under the Fair Labor Standards Act

Employees can be covered by the FLSA in two ways:

  1. enterprise coverage
  2. individual coverage.
