Family and medical leaves — Missouri

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was passed by the United States Congress in 1993. The FMLA was designed to allow employees to balance their work and family life by taking reasonable unpaid leave for medical reasons, for the birth or adoption of a child, and for the care of a child, spouse or parent who has a “serious health condition.” On January 16, 2009, new regulations regarding the FMLA took effect. The changes represent a significant restructuring and revision of FMLA and are intended to provide more clarity to the regulations and additional support to families with service members who are called for duty or who are injured while on active duty. In addition, on October 28, 2009 the National Defense Authorization Act of 2010 took effect, which further expanded the FMLA rights of military personnel and their families. Additional changes to the FMLA regulations relating to leave for military members became effective in March 2013. Finally, on March 27, 2015, new regulations were issued to expand the definition of spouse under the FMLA to recognize the legality of same-sex marriage.
