The federal minimum wage

The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 per hour. Employers are not limited to paying nonexempt employees on an hourly basis. Employers may pay nonexempt employees on a salaried, piecework, commission, or other basis as long as the employee makes at least the equivalent of the minimum hourly rate for all hours worked. The federal minimum wage for all workers on new or extended covered federal contracts is $15.00 per hour.

The state/local minimum wage

State and local governments have been instituting or raising minimum wage rates more and more frequently. The following table shows the state and local minimum wage rates in effect at the beginning of January 2024 and illustrates the potential variations in state/local law. It does not reflect other differences that might exist between the state/local and federal requirements. Note that certain cities may also have additional required minimum wage rates applicable to employees of public employers, hotel employees, airport employees, and employers with government contracts and other specific occupations; the table below does not include these rates.
