Posting requirements

Numerous state and federal laws require employers to post notices in the workplace in a location where they are accessible to employees. Failure to post such notices is itself a violation of the particular law.

Federal posters

The postings identified below are required by federal law. There are other posters that may be required to be posted depending on the nature of the business, i.e. agriculture, federal contractor, etc. The federal Department of Labor has a detailed chart listing the nature of the business and whether a poster need be posted. Employers are encouraged to review this chart to ensure complete compliance:

7. Annual Summary of Injuries

An employer must post for three months each year (February through April) a summary of the prior year’s work-related injuries using OSHA Form 300-A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses). For a simple explanation of how to complete the log and the summary of the log see:

The following postings are required by state law in Illinois. Many posters are available via:

1. Your Rights Under Illinois Employment Law

This poster is required for all Illinois employers. This poster includes the information needed for Wage Payment and Collection Act, Child Labor Law, Minimum Wage Law, Equal Pay Act, Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act and the One Day Rest in Seven Act. 2. Employee Classification Act 

This poster is required for all construction contractors that use independent contractors.

The Employee Classification Act provides that individuals performing services for construction contractors on or after January 1, 2008 are presumed to be employees of the contractor unless they meet certain criteria. This notice, in English, Spanish, and Polish, must be posted in a conspicuous place on each job site where those individuals perform services and in each of the contractor’s offices. 3. Safety Inspection & Education Act and Health & Safety Act

This poster is required for public sector employers only.

These laws provide workplace safety and health protections for public employees through enforcement of occupational safety and health standards and education about safe working conditions and occupational hazards. 4. Day and Temporary Labor Services Act

This poster is required for all day and temporary labor service agencies.

This Act provides for the regulation of day and temporary labor agencies, establishes worker rights and protections, specifies the duties and responsibilities of day and temporary labor agencies and third party clients, sets forth penalties and enforcement procedures for violations of the law and requires third party clients that contract with day or temporary labor agencies to verify that they are registered with the DOL or face penalties. Agencies must post this notice, in English or any other language generally understood in the locale of the agency, in the public access area of each work location or branch office. 5. Workers' Compensation Notice

This poster is required for all employers. This poster is also available from:

7. Emergency Care for Choking

This poster is required in all food service establishment in Illinois and must be posted in a conspicuous location that is visible to both patrons and employees. This poster is also available from:

8. Smoke Free Illinois Act

Business owners in Illinois are required to post “No Smoking” signs at each entrance to the place of employment or public place where smoking is prohibited. A poster that complies with the Smoke Free Illinois Act is also available from:

9. Pregnancy Rights Notice

Effective January 1, 2015, all employers in Illinois are required to post in a conspicuous location a notice prepared by the Illinois Department of Human Rights discussing an employee's rights under the Illinois Human Rights Act regarding pregnancy in the workplace and an employer's obligation to accommodate pregnancy. 10. Illinois Servicemember Employment & Reemployment Rights Act

Effective January 1, 2019, all employers in Illinois are required to post the Illinois Servicemember Employment & Reemployment Rights Act poster. This Act is administered by the Illinois Attorney General's office. A copy of this required poster can be found at:

  • One Day Rest in Seven ActEffective January 1, 2023, all employers in Illinois are required to post a notice summarizing the requirements of the One Day Rest in Seven Act. This poster will be available on the Illinois Department of Labor's website:
