The Cost of Commuting: Reinstituting Remote Work and Other Measures to Avoid the Loss of Commuting Employees

The omnipresence of signs with the price of gasoline in our lives means current inflation is more apparent at the gas pump than anything else we might buy. For employees with long or heavily trafficked commutes, gas prices are hitting particularly hard. Even employees who were not thrilled with the idea of remote work may be rethinking it as going to the office eats a bigger and bigger chunk of their paycheck. If employers do not get out in front of this, employees may well look for and accept remote work jobs which are still widely available in many fields or try to find jobs closer to their homes. Remote work is one tool in an employer’s arsenal to prevent the loss of employees, but there are others including a transportation benefit plan. This session will cover steps employers are taking to respond to the impact of transportation inflation on their employees.
