"Ban the Box" turns 20: What employers need to know about the current framework

Twenty years ago, Hawaii enacted a restriction on employer inquiries into applicant work histories, becoming the first state in the nation to “ban the box.” Today, there are “ban the box” restrictions in at least 11 states and 17 localities affecting private employers’ rights to inquire into and consider applicants’ employment histories, criminal records, credit histories, and more.
