Developing a comprehensive health and safety program — OSHA

Safety and health management systems

An effective, comprehensive program on workplace health and safety is vital to the success of any employer’s enterprise. An employer’s decision to do the things that protect its employees from hazards and to ensure compliance with OSHA and industry standards certainly lowers the risk of injury, illness, and death, but the benefits extend well beyond this primary objective. An effective safety and health management system contain at least four elements, including:

  1. management commitment and employment involvement/engagement
  1. worksite analysis
  1. hazard prevention and control
  1. safety and health training.

Guidelines for the effective management and protection of employee safety and health are summarized in the following paragraphs.
