HR’s role in disaster planning

Significant human resources issues must be addressed quickly in the wake of natural disasters. Sound disaster planning requires that human resources issues be recognized and that adequate attention is given to both preventive and remedial steps. The goals should be to:

  • comply with local, state and federal laws and regulations
  • meet employee needs at a time of crisis
  • preserve the human capital necessary to enable the company to recover from the incident and resume productive operations.

This chapter will provide an overview of some of the fundamental issues that need to be addressed in a post-emergency incident response.
