Disability plans — Benefits

Group health plans provide for the payment of at least some portion of an employee’s expenses for medical care and treatment. However, if the employee is unable to work because of illness or injury, group health plans generally do not protect the employee against income losses arising from his or her inability to work. Protection against the loss of capacity to work is provided through public and/or private disability plans or programs. Disability plans are plans intended to protect employees against the risk of a partial or complete loss of ability to earn a living because of an injury or illness. Ordinarily, disability plans cover only non-work-related injury or illness because workers’ compensation coverage covers work-related injury and illness.

More specifically stated, depending on how the plan defines the term “disability,” a disability plan protects against the risk that an employee will be unable to perform the duties of his or her regular job. Also, a disability plan could protect against the risk that the employee will be unable to perform any job at all for which they are reasonably suited by training, education or experience.
