Wages and hours — Arizona

Arizona employers are required to comply with both the federal wage and hour laws and the Arizona wage and hour laws described in this chapter. If the laws are different, the employer must meet the highest standards. For example, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and the Arizona minimum wage is $13.85 per hour. Employers in Arizona must pay at least $13.85 per hour unless exempt from the Arizona law.

The Fair Labor Standards Act

The federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) was enacted during the Great Depression. It was designed to create more jobs at a fair salary. Its key components are a limit upon the number of hours an employee can work at a regular rate, the establishment of a minimum wage and the regulation of child labor. See Child labor. Its purpose was to cause employers to hire more workers, rather than having existing employees work more hours.
