Safety and health — Missouri

Missouri employers are covered by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) that addresses workplace safety and health issues. Missouri does not have a state equivalent to the OSH Act, but other states do. Therefore, if a Missouri employer operates outside Missouri, it may be subject to other states’ programs regarding workplace safety. 

The federal OSH Act provides the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with the authority to police the Act through inspections of workplaces and other forms of investigation. OSHA has the authority to promulgate rules, standards and regulations governing workplace safety and health.

Who is covered 

The OSH Act has extremely broad coverage of nearly all private-sector employers and their employees. Certain employers, however, are exempt from coverage.
